Terceira Pilgrimage Ministry

Rodney Tilley shares his pilgrimage experience.

The Terceira Pilgrimage is not just a ministry—it is an invitation to grow deeper in the Lord in one of the most pristine destinations in the world.

Rising from the heart of the Atlantic Ocean, this jewel of the Portuguese Azores is the third largest of the nine islands, yet it carries a beauty and presence that feels far greater than its size. Known as the Lilac Island, Terceira is draped in endless waves of hydrangeas, their soft violet hues stretching across hills and valleys like a living canvas. The air is gentle, fragrant, and alive—an atmosphere that feels set apart, almost sacred.

Here, the climate is mild, the landscape lush, and the pace of life invites you to slow down… to breathe… to listen. It’s no surprise that travelers have called it the “Hawaii of the Atlantic,” or that Travel and Leisure has ranked the Azores among the top islands in the world. Yet long before modern recognition, this land stirred something deeper in those who encountered it. Early Portuguese explorers described it as reminiscent of the Biblical Garden of Eden. Even Saint Brendan of Ireland, who believed he had discovered it centuries earlier, spoke of it as a glimpse of heaven itself—a place where the presence of God felt near.

That sense has not faded.

When Pope John Paul II visited Terceira in 1991 and celebrated Mass in Angra do Heroísmo, he too recognized the extraordinary beauty of this island—a beauty that does more than inspire awe; it draws the heart upward.

Because Terceira is more than visually stunning—it is spiritually stirring.

As you walk its winding paths, stand along its cliffs, or sit quietly among its flowers, you begin to notice something profound: creation here seems to whisper. It speaks not only of beauty, but of its Creator. As Scripture reminds us,

"For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead…" (Romans 1:20a).

This is what makes Terceira a sacred setting for a different kind of journey—a pilgrimage of the heart.

Here, you are invited to encounter God not in distraction, but in stillness. Not in noise, but in presence. Through His Word, through His works, and through the quiet, unmistakable awareness that He is near.

The people of Terceira have long understood this rhythm. They often describe their island as one of “fun, family, friendship, and faith”—yet it is faith that anchors it all. It is woven into the culture, the celebrations, the daily life. It is lived, not merely spoken.

And for those who come seeking something more—something deeper—this island becomes a place of renewal.

A place where you can rediscover wonder.
A place where your heart can be realigned.
A place where you can draw near to God—and find that He is already drawing near to you.

As the Bible promises, "Draw near to God and He will draw near to you…. (James 4:8a)"

And as you step into this journey, something beautiful begins to unfold—not just around you, but within you.

Desires become clarified.
Faith becomes awakened.
Joy becomes rooted in something eternal.

Because when you truly encounter Him, everything changes.

"Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart." (Psalms 19:4)

This is the invitation of Terceira Pilgrimage.

To come away.
To behold.
To encounter.

And to begin a Pilgrimage of the Holy Spirit that will illuminate your heart in ways you may have never experienced before.
