Pilgrimage

Routes & Itinerary

Suggested Pilgrimage Route: “The Circle of the Holy Spirit” The 35 Holy Spirit Imperios (chapels) Path (East to West). There are 75 Imperios on the island, and if your goal is to visit them all, plan on a longer walk, as many are located in out-of-the-way streets and villages. However, the 35 Imperios listed on this pilgrimage walk will be easily accessible and will lead you around the entire outside perimeter of Terceira.

Distance: Approximately 90 kilometers

Hiking Pilgrimage: 5-7 days if you hike the entire pilgrimage route. Select Here for Itinerary.

Driving Pilgrimage: 2-3 days by car, plus extra days for sightseeing. Select Here for Itinerary.

Hiking Itinerary

  • “Experience the agricultural parishes of Praia da Vitoria, where devotion and the hospitality of God thrive amidst the fertile fields and the volcanic peak of Serra do Cume.”

    Distance: 17 km

    Duration: 7 hours

Arrive at Lajes and proceed to Praia Vitoria to check into your hotel or pension. Since you will be tired after flying, we recommend spending the day getting necessary supplies at the Continente Supermarket on Estrada da Circunvalacao, 9760-400, Praia da Vitoria. Hours 8:30 am – 11:00 pm daily. It has an excellent bakery, coffee shop, and grocery store. Then take some time to get used to the weather, cultural mores, and be sure to drop by the “Terceira Pilgrimage Center” for maps, literature, and other information. We recommend that you purchase the “Workbook and Guide to the Holy Spirit Pilgrimage.” It is available in print, on Kindle, or as an audiobook on Amazon Books under the author’s name, Allan Rodney Tilley. It will be referenced to as the “Workbook” throughout the text. You may explore your first Holy Spirit Imperios in the town of Praia Vitoria and begin your time of prayer and reflection, asking the Holy Spirit to lead and guide you throughout this pilgrimage. You may also want to stop in for private prayer at one of the historical churches found in the city center. There is also a Baptist Church in the town center as well. The Imperios are listed by address, coordinates, and will include founding dates and historical context. They are listed below:

    1. Imperio do Espirito dos Maritimos, (Largo Jose Silvestre Riberio, Santa Cruz, Praia Vitoria). 19th-20th C. (38.73197, -27.05909) Google Map. Page 159 in “The Workbook.” The Imperio, or shrine, is found next to Praia beach, behind the Hotel Praia Marina, and close to the Church of Santo Cristo. The Imperio is named in honor of the maritime workers and sailors, along with the harbor’s working class, who together seek peace from the worries of daily life on the ocean. The sailors, fishermen, and other manual laborers face spiritual and physical fears as they face oceanic dangers. The sailors sought divine protection, as we do too. It is an occupational brotherhood or fraternity seeking the Holy Spirit’s help in seafaring struggles. Spiritual Heart: Labor as vocation, and our need for the blessing of God on our work. We will pray for God’s protection, for peace and solidarity among workers, and for the dignity of manual labor, as Ecclesiastes 9:3 admonishes us: “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might…” Ask the Holy Spirit to direct you in the work you do, whether at home or away.

    2. Imperio do Espirito das Craincas, (Rua Dr. Rodrigues A. da Silva – vulgo Rua da Cima, Santa Cruz, Praia da Vitoria) 19-20th C. (38.73270, -27.06017) Google Map. Page 155 of the “Workbook.” It is one of the most unique Imperios, as it is not a chapel but a display case for the artifacts from the Holy Spirit Festivals held yearly. It is located on the street below the Church of Santo Cristo. It is the Imperio of the children, dedicated to the young. Jesus said, “Assuredly, I say to you unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18:3) It is time to begin approaching God with a childlike faith, with spiritual ideals, innocence, wonder, and trust. Spiritual Heart: Childlike faith, protecting innocence, passing faith to the next generation, and becoming as children in the sight of God.

    3. Imperio do Divino Santo da Caridade das Figueiras do Paim -Santa Cruz, (Rua Circular Interna, Largo das Figueiras do Palm, Santa Cruz, Praia da Vitoria). 1941 20th C. (38.73443, -27.06329) Google Map. Page 171 of the “Workbook.” The Imperio is located on the ring road leading to the airport at Lajes. Built during WWII, it is about having faith during the darkest global conflict. It admonishes us to seek charity in peace and in war. The Imperio’s name also evokes the image of the fig tree, a symbol of peace and prosperity, linking the shrine to those who seek God’s blessing on their harvest. Spiritual focus: Compassion to those in need, bearing spiritual fruit, and seeking love and charity to those caught in conflict, both from without and within.

    4. Imperio do Espirito do Rossio, (Rua Dr. Sousa Junior, Santa Cruz, Praia da Vitoria). 1964 (38.72964, -27.06424) Google Map. Page 157 in the “Workbook.” The Imperio is located in the middle of the town of Praia and is unique among Imperios for being two-storied and featuring a distinct architectural façade. It is located in the city “commons,” indicating an emphasis on shared vision, common faith, and living our faith in community. Spiritual Heart: Understanding that no one stands alone, but we all need each other as we continue in our Holy Spirit faith walk. We have shared experiences that require shared intercession and prayer. We do this as a group, not just as individuals, and we ask God to bless us, not just me.

    5. Imperio do Espirito Santo de Santa Luzia, (Canada de Santa Luzia, Santa Cruz, Praia da Vitoria). 19th-20th C. (38.74879, -27.08354) Google Map. Page 153 in the “Workbook.” This Imperio is easy to miss, as it sits on an overhang, looking down on the street below. It is in the town of Praia on the Lajes airport road. The Imperio is named after an early Christian martyr, St. Lucy, who, in the midst of persecution and torture, refused to recant her faith. As both men and women seek God, we must understand that no one is exempt from hardships and trials. Spiritual Heart: Pray for those in countries that suffer persecution of the body and soul. Ask God to give you courage that we all may find boldness in our faith to witness to others of the love of God, despite our circumstances. Pray that you will be strong in your faith and full of the Holy Spirit of God.

    6. Imperio do Espirito da Rua Serpa Pinto – Santa Cruz, (R. Aniceto D’Ornelis, Rua Serpa Pinto, ao Lado da Academia do Juventude, Praia da Vitoria). 19th-20th C. (38.729173, -27.061133) Google Map. Page 169 in the “Workbook.” The Imperio is next to the beach at Praia. It is different because this façade is totally out of character in its architecture. It is modern, newly constructed, and looks like a storefront business. It is easy to find, as it faces the sandy beach in Praia da Vitoria. It is beside the Youth Academy, thereby beckoning the youth to come to faith at an impressionable age. For too long, religious activity has been seen as something for older adults, but spiritual fervor is for every generation. Spiritual Heart: Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you the sins of your youth that you have not asked forgiveness for. Whether it is asking God or some offending person, take time to ask God to assist you in finding and giving forgiveness in the name of God. There is no need to hold on to past indiscretions, sins, or ungodly behavior. Leave it with Jesus at the foot of the cross, where he exclaimed, “Father, forgive them for they do not know what they do.” (Luke 23:24). The Holy Spirit will convict you, so listen closely for his gentle push to get all things right and holy.

Since this is the first day of the pilgrimage, you might want to take a short, however, fairly strenuous hike to one of the most scenic panoramas on the island. If you are too tired from the flight, numerous taxis and Uber will also take you to the top of Serra do Cume. The hike to Serra do Cume will take approximately 6 hours round-trip, and you will climb from sea level to over five hundred meters. As the Imperios directs you to reflection on the leading and guidance of the Holy Spirit, the hike and view at Serra do Cume will cause you to re-examine your relationship with God, the Creator. The EN2-1A road leads you out of Praia. After that, the cobblestone road to the top, lined with flowers of all colors and shapes, will be clearly marked. It is a must-see view that you should start the pilgrimage with, leaving an image in your mind of how great God is. Be sure to bring snacks and enough water, as the hike can be pretty tricky. Be sure to take rain gear as the top can be windy, wet, and foggy at times.

  • “The road that follows the southern coastline, where sea, salt, and stone converge into a harmony of prayer and celebration.”

    Distance: 25 km.

    Duration: 7 hours

Since Terceira is an island, one is never really lost, for all you have to do is head to the sea. That is again true on this hike along the coastline road: you always take the road to the left, the EN1-2A, which leads to gorgeous sea views of black basaltic rock pulverized by waves, leaving pools of white sea foam mixed with the deep blue of the ocean. It leaves a rainbow of color as the watery mist is refracted by the sun. As the waves crash onto the shore, once again, the God of creation, the great Jehovah, challenges your preconceived ideas of how big God is. You look across the vast expanse of the ocean, and you feel so small. You walk, and you pray, and you are amazed that God has called you to Himself. At each Imperio, you stop and reflect, pray, and dive deeper into the nature of God, the Holy Trinity. The Holy Spirit Imperios that you will encounter as you hike are listed below:

    1. Imperio do Espirito das Tronqueras de Santa Cruz (EN1-1A, 35, A Largo, Tronqueiras, Santa Cruz, 9760, Praia da Vitoria). 130 (38.71389, -27.06333) Google Map. Page 167 in the “Workbook.” This Imperio is one of the most unique Imperios you will encounter, for it sits squarely in the middle of the road. It stands as a symbol of undying faith amid new construction and changing pathways. It stands as a sentinel of faith and grace, defying changing mores and new age thinking. Ideas may change, but God is still the same, and the small Imperio proclaims that loudly. Spiritual Heart: How to keep your faith during economic hardships and find long-term stability in an in ever-changing world. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8)

    2. Imperio do Espirito Santo do Cabo da Praia (Rua Santa Catarina, Largo do Cabo da Praia, Cabo da Praia, Praia Vitoria). 1853-1858 (38.70723, -27.05800) Google Map. Page 151 in the “Workbook.” The Imperio Santo do Cabo is actually two buildings that sit in a small plaza across from the local Catholic Church. You can stop and sit on the bench in the plaza, or rest and pray in the church across the street. Behind the Imperio, there is also a small sandy beach that is often overlooked. Next to the main Imperio is a “despensa” for storing charitable gifts. Spiritual Heart: It is time to remember those less fortunate than we are. We should appreciate the scripture that states, “Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.” (James 1:27)

    3. Imperio do Espirito Santo do Porto Martins (M 509, Largo do Comendador Pamplona, Porto Martins, Praia da Vitoria). 19th-20th C. (38.68562, -27.05674) Google Map. Page 149 in the “Workbook.” On the waterfront in Porto Martins, there is one of the most beautiful Imperios of Terceira. It is well kept, featuring a brilliant mosaic of blue Portuguese tile that shows the symbols of bread and wine, highlighting the Eucharistic liturgy seen in the Holy Spirit ceremonies enacted across the island. Set against the ocean’s edge, it is a remarkable image of faith lived in practical ways. Across from the Imperio are a popular restaurant, a snack bar, and natural swimming pools. The village takes its name from the Martins family and is still widely used as a fishing port. Spiritual Heart: We are to remember that the pilgrimage is not just for the pilgrim, but also for those not walking the way. We are admonished to be “Fishers of men.” (Mark 1:17) Share the love of Jesus as you walk the path of pilgrimage to locals and fellow pilgrims.

    4. Imperio do Espirito Santo do Sao Sebastiao (Rua Igreja, Largo da Igreja, Vila de Sao Sebastiao, Angra do Heroismo). 1918 (38.66533, -27.09092) Google Map. Page 145 in the “Workbook.” São Sebastião is home to the earliest church building that still stands on Terceira. It sits in the village square, where many people stop to drink coffee and talk, and across from it is the Imperio of São Sebastião. It is so ornate that it appears very Eastern in its cultural identity. Still, its vibrant colors clearly indicate it is a source of pride for the villagers who attend the Holy Spirit Festivities under its direction. Make sure you also take time to go into the São Sebastião church, built by the Flemish settlers in 1455. Spiritual Heart: Take time to admire the church on the square and the Imperio, both of which show the creativity of man, who, when blessed by God, reflects His beauty. Be sure to notice both the beauty of nature created by God and the wonderful creations of men inspired by God. Do not be so quick as to miss those “God moments.”

    5. Imperio do Espirito Santo do Porto Judeu de Baixo (Terreiro, Vila do Porto Judeu, Angra do Heroismo). 1916 (38.648419, -27.117881) Google Map. Page 139 in the “Workbook.” The Imperio seems out of place since it is literally in the village called the Port of Jews because of the large Jewish population that lived there in the past. Some say they were conversos, or Jews who had converted to Christianity, but today there are no remaining Jewish settlers who are identified here. The last family of Jewish origin left in the 1990s. However, the Imperio continues to serve as a source of faithful commitment in a village named after those who had lived here for over four hundred years. Spiritual Heart: We need to focus on welcoming strangers to our shores, to our homes, and into our lives. The Bible says, “A man who has friends must himself be friendly. But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” (Proverbs 18:24) We need to be friends who are friends for life and as we reflect on the Jews who once were here and have now left, may we always be ready to leave a good impression on all those who cross our paths, especially to those we call friends. Remember, Jesus calls you “friend” as well. (John 15:15)

    6. Imperio do Espirito das Merces da Feteira (Canada das Merces, Feteira, Angra do Heroismo). 19th-20th C. (38.65501, -27.15019) Google Map. Page 135 in the “Workbook.” There is an important tourist attraction, Pico Dona Joana, near Feteira, but if you hike there, you will probably not make it to Angra by nightfall. If you have time at the end of the pilgrimage, you might want to come back and climb to the top of the volcano of Pico Dona Joana. It is not a long hike but a rewarding one; however, the Imperio in Fereira is also an important destination. It has an interesting name that invokes grace and mercy from the Lord our God. It is named Merces, or what we would define as compassion, mercy, and grace. These are the foundation stones on which Christianity is built. Spiritual Heart: Leave your anger and vengeance behind for a moment and turn to God for his healing. Let his grace and mercy flood over you in waves of compassion. If there is nothing else understood on this pilgrimage, understand that God loves you, manifested in Jesus, and guided by the Holy Spirit. God is love, pure love, given to all those who will receive it.

You are now returning to the main road that leads to Angra. You will continue further inland, but stay on R 1-1. ENT 1-A joins ENT 2-A, as they both end in Angra. There are two more Imperios, but they are off the main road in the village of Ribeirinha.

    1. Imperio do Espirito Santo do Serra da Ribeirinha (Terreiro do Paco 9, Ribeirinha, Angra do Heroismo) 1911 (38.664432, -27.17827) Google Map. Page 129 in the “Workbook.” There is an interesting legend surrounding the Imperio. It is stated that during a volcanic eruption, a lava flow was heading towards the village of Serretinha. Through prayer and supplication, the lava diverted and flowed into the sea, thereby saving the village from destruction. The Imperio is named for the people’s joy at being delivered from a disastrous natural event. Spiritual Heart: Some say that the scripture that says, “For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.” (Mark 11:23) is very appropriate for emphasis at this Imperio. If there are mountains in your life that you seemingly cannot climb, rest on this promise, and ask the Lord to remove them and cast them away. Seek to be free from all hindrances that may stop the manifestation of the Holy Spirit in your life.

    2. Imperio do Espirito Santo da Ladeira Grande (Terreiro, Ladeira Grande, No. 67, Ribeirinha, Angra do Heroismo) 19th-20th C. (38.65866, -27.16687) Google Map. Page 131 in the “Workbook.” The name of this Imperio means “Big Slope” and therefore evokes the idea of a steady move upward in the maturity of the believer. Stop and ask yourself if you have been growing in your faith. Spiritual Heart: Seek to grow higher in your faith. Seek to know more, and to seek more. The Bible states that, “…seek and you shall find….” (Matthew 7:7). Reach out to God and find what you have been missing and receive all that God has for you.

You will now be entering Angra do Heroismo, where, instead of walking the Holy Spirit Pilgrimage, you may want to play the tourist and find a suitable place to spend the night, then proceed to the various museums and other tourist attractions. There are about 20 Imperios in the old capital of the Azores, but you will not see them all; however, they are easily found using the “Workbook” and the addresses listed inside. By now, you can spot the Imperios by their architecture. However, instead of finding spiritual guidance as you hike, you may find spiritual inspiration from the history that pervades the city. Start at the harbor in Angra and visit the “Igreja da Misericordia,” a church that, in history past, you would see as you first pull into the harbor. Adhering to the Portuguese philosophy, they would plant a church directly at the harbor entrance, so that the first order of business would be to come and pray. Next to the Misericordia Church is the old hospital, and next to that, the tax house. All three buildings were to cater to the needs of the sailors and their cargo. However, the church was first in importance, highlighting the faith of the Portuguese people and their desire to put God first.

  • “Follow in the paths of those who have gone before as they lead us into a deeper understanding of God through faith and practice.”

    Distance: 8 km

    Duration: 7 hours

It is suggested that you obtain one of the many excellent tourist pamphlets and maps that indicate where the museums are located, as well as other points of interest in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Angra do Heroismo. Angra do Heroismo was, in the past, the historical capital and center of business and commerce for the Island of Terceira. With its narrow cobblestone streets and traditional, colorful façades, it takes you back to earlier times when Portugal was a significant political power alongside Spain, Holland, and England. Hiking in the conventional sense is not possible, but touring the ancient city is a must. There are numerous museums, touristic churches, and the island’s only Cathedral. As you hike and approach the downtown commercial center, there are many hotels, pensions, and apartments for rent. Some offer nightly stays, but others will only rent to you for a minimum of 3 days. Please make sure you check. There is also a variety of cafes and restaurants, including traditional Azorean cuisine, Chinese, Tex-Mex, and many well-known fast-food outlets.

As this is a spiritual pilgrimage, there are certain areas of interest that you may want to visit. Near the town square is the only Cathedral on Terceira, the Cathedral of Angra do Heroismo. It was here that Pope John Paul visited in 1991, and a plaque commemorating his visit is attested to. Also, a famous Franciscan martyr is celebrated in the Cathedral as well. In 1597, the Japanese conducted a purge that virtually eliminated all Christian influence in the country of Japan. Then in 1610, one of the remaining Monks, Beato Joao Baptista Macho, of the Azores, was martyred there too for his Christian faith. A stained-glass window in his honor is in the left corner of the Cathedral, where you can see a depiction of a Japanese sword raised to behead the priest. The movie, “Silence,” is well known for its depiction of this hideous event.

Other notable individuals who are readily known in the history of European culture and connected to Angra include Paulus da Gama. Paulus was Vasco da Gama’s brother and sailed on the first ship to reach India from Portugal. Later on, on the return trip, he became ill and was left in Terceira for medical treatment. Subsequently, he succumbed to the illness and died, and is buried in the Monastery of São Francisco, which now houses the Municipal Museum of Angra do Heroismo. On Sundays, all museums are free.

However, since we are on the Holy Spirit pilgrimage, we encourage you to visit some of the over 13 Imperios in the District of Angra, especially the Imperio do Espírito Santo do Outeiro.

    1. Imperio do Espirito Santo do Outeiro (Rua das Maravilhas, Outeiro, Conceicao, Angra do Heroismo) 1670 (38.659210, -27.216970) Google Map. Page 105 in the “Workbook.” This Imperio is the oldest on the island and has over four hundred years of continuous worship and celebration. It is well to acknowledge that the life of Christ has been and will continue to be continually worshipped from the founding of Angra to the present time, and beyond. Generation after generation has come and gone, but “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever.” (Isaiah 40:8) Spiritual Heart: The primary goal of any pilgrimage is to grow in our faith and to remain faithful. We will not fall away, or fall back, but will push forward with renewed vigor and a renewed love of God. We will ask the Holy Spirit to reveal what God wants us to do in the future and then ask the Spirit to guide us there, step by step.

    2. Imperio do Espirito Santo da Santa Casa da Misericordia (Largo do Imperio, Ao Lar de Idosos da SCMAH, Conceicao, Angra do Heroismo) 19th-20th C. (38.66022, -27.21208) Google Map. Page 107 in the “Workbook.” The Imperio is connected to the Holy Spirit Hospital in Angra, which was built in 1498 at the harbor’s entrance, but has now been reconstructed on Canada do Breado in Angra. In the Bible, after the Holy Spirit was poured out on the believers in the Acts of the Apostles, the disciples of Jesus began to care for widows and orphans. Following this tradition, the” Imperio of Misericordia is located on the grounds of the home for the elderly located in Angra. This is an indication that Christ admonishes us to share compassion in tangible, practical ways that show his love to all people, whether young or old. Spiritual Heart: During our time of pilgrimage, many are too sick to make the physical journey required to complete the task. We are to be mindful of others’ needs and also thankful for the health we currently have, which enables us to continue hiking and experiencing all that the Holy Spirit reveals to us. God heals, and the Bible gives us the promise that, “by his stripes we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5).

    3. Imperio do Espirito do Lameirinho (Rua Doctor Anibal de Bettencourt 179A, Lameirinho, Conceicao, Angra do Heroismo) 19th-20th C. (38.665330, -27.215423) Google Map. Page 109 in the “Workbook.” Lameirinho means “little muddy place,” a name that reflects back to its agricultural heritage and humble beginnings. It is a small local community with close ties to the land and to the people who care for the crops and cattle that form the basis of its economy. Spiritual Heart: In many instances, the poor and working class are overlooked and deemed unimportant by the general public. However, in God’s sight, everyone has been made in God’s image, including all those who walk the pilgrimage.

    4. Imperio do Espirito Santo do Barrio do Lameirinho do Conceicao (Largo do Imperio, Barrio do Lameirinho, Conceicao, Angra do Heroismo) 19th-20th C. (38.66355, -27.21771) Google Map. Page 103 in the “Workbook.” This is the 2nd Imperio in the Lameirinho district, which represents the very nature of the Godly character that says all people are equal in the sight of God. The structure is more modern in appearance, but it indicates that the idea of the Christian faith has no color, gender, or nationality, and also no specific architectural ideology. Spiritual Heart: Seek to understand that God is present in many Christian cultures around the world, and we are just a small part of what God is doing in the world. It is a humbling experience to understand that God has included you in His kingdom, not because of who you are, but because of who God is.

    5. Imperio do Espirito Santo da Rua Nova do Conceicao (Rua Nova, No. 21, Praca Dr. Sousa Junior, Conceicao, Angra do Heroismo) 1799 (38.65737, -27.21543) Google Map. Page 113 in the “Workbook.” The Imperio you see standing today is a newly rebuilt Imperio, reconstructed after the 1980 earthquake. After the earthquake, the Imperio’s elders shifted the focus of its endeavors to pure religion. The suffering and calamity from the earthquake were a “wake-up” call to many that life is short and eternity long; therefore, spend money and time on things that are eternal. Spiritual Heart: Ask God what things in your life need to be transformed and made new. We find ourselves worrying about life today when life in the future should be our primary focus. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal what is in your inner man, in your soul, and see if it pleases our Lord Jesus.

    6. Imperio do Espirito Santo Dos Inocentes Da Guarita (Rua da Guarita 41, Conceicao, Angra do Heroismo) 19th-20th C. (38.657871, -27.213782) Google Map. Page 115 in the “Workbook.” Guarita means “watchtower” or “sentinel,” to warn and call out dangers and the mistakes of taking the wrong road in life. It honors the Holy Innocents, martyred by Herod, as described in the New Testament. We are called to warn our children and raise them in the fear and love of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit is our guide, along with the Bible. Spiritual Heart: All of us have a family, whether alive or in passing, but each person is reminded of their responsibility to all members of their immediate and distant family. If you are estranged from any member of your family, ask the Holy Spirit to show you how to make it right and renew old vows, relationships, and friendships.

    7. Imperio do Espirito Santo da Caridade do Corpo Santo (Rua do Cardoso 19/R, Pero Anes do Canto, Corpo Santo, Conceicao, Angra do Heroismo) 19-29th C. (38.65400, -27.21575) Google Map. Page 111 in the “Workbook.” Caridade means “charity” or “love given,” while Corpo Santo means “holy body,” indicating that our love and charity are given to those in need in the Body of Christ. This Imperio has the tradition of providing meat, soup, and bread to the poor. Spiritual Heart: As we walk the Holy Spirit Pilgrimage, let us walk with a generous spirit and a helpful hand to others walking the pilgrimage, as well as to all those fellow sojourners we encounter. We are on this walk together bearing one another’s burdens and as the Bible proclaims, let us, “Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed.” (James 5:16a)

    8. Imperio do Espirito Santo dos Remedios (Rua Francisco de Ornelas, Corpo Santo, Conceicao, Angra do Heroismo) 19th-20th C. (38.65791, -27.214869) Google Map. Page 101 in the “Workbook.” The Imperio Remedios stands for remedies, solutions, and seeking help with life’s questions. Spiritual Heart: Since we are on this pilgrimage seeking remedies for our ailments that plague our lives, let us seek the Holy Spirit’s direction, as the Bible says. “However, when He, “the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth….” (John 16:13a) Let Him be your guide as you walk and seek more of the Lord and his truth.

    9. Imperio do Espirito Santo dos Quatro Cantos de Se (Rua Recreio Dos Artistas, No. 38, Se, Angra do Heroismo) 19th-20th C. (38.65374, -27.22277) Google Map. This Imperio sits in the four corners of Angra’s cathedral parish. As the Imperios are not under the dictates of the church, but are a “grassroots” Christian movement, we still seek to have an ecclesiastical covering. Spiritual Heart: We do not have to be under anyone or anything, but you choose to do so by submitting your life to Christ, in an act of your free will. You seek to be accountable to the church, friends, elders, and to the Holy Spirit himself. It is lonely standing alone, but it is fantastic when you seek others to walk with you on this journey of life.

    10. Imperio do Espirito Santo do Conde de Santa Luzia (Rua de Conde da Praia da Vitoria, Santa Luzia, Angra do Heroismo) 19th-20th C. (38.65810, -27.22287) Google Map. Page 99 in the “Workbook.” Most Imperios are not named after Saints, but this one is called “Saint Lucy,” after the patron saint of the blind. According to legend, she was martyred for her faith in the fourth century and burned at the stake, but before dying, her eyes were also gouged out her eyes. Luzia is connected with light; therefore, we, too, as Saint Luzia, seek to follow the light. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.” (John 8:12), so let us follow the light out of our own personal darkness. Spiritual Heart: As Jesus tells us to follow Him, and we too will walk in the light, let us seek the illumination of God in our hearts. There are hidden recesses in the innermost parts of our souls that need to be rid of their ugly darkness and be renewed in the light of His favor. Seek God and let him reveal to you the darkness that still remains in your life.

    11. Imperio do Espirito Santo da Rua de Baixo de Santo Luzia (Rua de Baixo de Santa Luzia, Santa Luzia, Angra do Heroismo) 19th-20th C. (38.65735, -27.22207) Google Map. Page 97 in the “Workbook.” This Imperio is also named in honor of Saint Lucy, the fourth-century martyr. However, this Imperio is located on an upper street, but it is not spiritually elevated above any others; it is only geographically. Spiritual Heart: Humility is a great virtue, but it is seldom seen. We elevate the achiever, the loud, the successful, and the rich, while challenging the humble and lowly to do more. Let us realize that it is the “meek who will inherit the earth,” and seek to emulate that virtue more readily in our lives.

    12. Imperio do Espirito Santo de Sao Joao de Deus (Bairro de Sao Joao de Deus, Santa Luzia, Angra do Heroismo) 19th-20th C. (38.661772, -27.219134) Google Map. Page 95 in the “Workbook.” St. John of God (1495-1550) was the founder of the Hospitallers, from whom the Imperio is named. We get the name ‘hospital’ from this order of caring people, who took it upon themselves to heal and care for the sick and needy. It is in this distinct historical tradition that the Imperio is named. Spiritual Heart: Pray for the medical personnel who labor for the ill and impoverished, who go unrecognized and are often unnamed. They care for us when we are born, all the way to the time we die. There is no profession outside of the clergy who do more to bring us comfort from our infirmities. Be thankful for your health and for those who keep you so. Tell them so the next time you visit the doctor’s clinic.

    13. Imperio do Espirito Santo da Ladeira Branca (EN3-1A, Ladeira Branca, Santa Luzia, Angra do Heroismo) 19th-20th C. (38.667227, -27.225640) Google Map. Page 93 in the “Workbook.” It is quite a climb to reach this Imperio, but we must understand that looking up symbolizes all that is holy. We look up to God, up to heaven, up to safety, and up to saving. Spiritual Heart: In the Bible, in the story of King Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 4:34 stated, “At the end of the time (the time when he was insane and living as cattle in the fields), I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven and my understanding (sanity) returned to me, and I blessed the Most High and praised and honored Him who live forever.” If, on this pilgrimage, you want to be restored to spiritual, emotional, and psychological wellness, look up to God. Look up from this earth, look up from your problems, and look upward towards heaven, and you, too, can be restored to sanity.

By now, at the end of day three, you are probably overwhelmed by the immense historical relevance Angra do Heroismo has played in Western cultural development. The museums, the forts, the galleries, and, of course, the Imperios, have challenged your ability to process all the information that has come your way today. I am sure you did not get to many of the Imperios on your hike today, so you might want to spend an extra day on the pilgrimage trail and return to take in all the sights and sounds slowly. Surely you could not take it all in in just one day, so it is okay to take an extra night and spend day four as a day of further exploration. Find yourself a fancy restaurant and treat yourself to a meal not fit for a pilgrim, but for a king. It is all right to bask in the favor of God and enjoy with all your senses all that the island has to offer. Be grateful for the day of discovery and start afresh tomorrow on your walk along the coast. Numerous other Imperios are in close proximity to Angra, but I do not think you will be able to see them in just one week of pilgrimage. You will have to return to Terra Cha, Posto Santo, São Pedro, and all the other communities that live close to Angra do Heroísmo and host the Imperios, and visit them at a later time.

  • “Leaving the old behind and pressing on to new frontiers in faith and devotion.”

    Distance: 22 km

    Duration: 6 hours

You will be leaving Angra on EN1-1A, heading west out of the city. It is the coastal road along the ocean’s edge. However, this time, the road will gradually climb to the coastal highlands. Throughout the hike, Santa Barbara Peak, an extinct volcano, will be on your right. Even though the island is small, you are heading westward to an entirely new ecosystem of large ferns, thick jungle, and rocky outcrops. It will not be evident at first, but as you continue on the road, every side road will lead you to a wooded outcropping and another hiking trail. Later on, on Day 5, we will be pushing inward toward the interior for a hike that looks like Jurassic World.

Nevertheless, today you will start to feel the change as the mountain looms in the distance and the sea breezes begin to blow. There is a difference from earlier hikes: nature is wilder, and the scenery is more intense. You will leave the Middle Ages and arrive in Serreta, where the ruins of an unknown civilization lie scattered across basaltic fields of walls and abandoned structures. No one knows who made them or when, but with the vast overgrowth of vines and other vegetation, you will swear you are among some Inca ruins in the jungles of Guatemala. At the end of the hike today, there is a lighthouse and a picnic area where silence is the only sound you hear. You will think you have left the Terceira that is known, and you will, for Serreta is a mystic place that begs you to seek the God you never knew. It is the God of the majestic, and the Holy Spirit will challenge your senses as you emotionally connect.

So let us begin the hike in the fishing village of São Mateus. There are some natural swimming pools along the water’s edge, as well as one of the best seafood restaurants on the island. It is a day of seeing new frontiers of faith in your life. However, before beginning today’s pilgrimage trail, make sure you book a place in Serreta or in another village close by. This needs to be done early.

    1. Imperio do Espirito Santo do Terreiro do Sao Mateus (EN1-1A 3, Ao Terreiro Sao Mateus) 19-20th C. (38.65580, -27.27210) Google Map. Page 61 in the “Workbook”. This Imperio is at the intersection of the main street and the harbor, with a unique kiosk situated in the village roundabout. The Imperio is named after Saint Matthew, who, although at odds with the Jewish world at the time, came into a relationship with Jesus and wrote one of the gospels. Spiritual Heart: We are all at odds with each other, ourselves, and the Lord. Take time to reconnect to what God is doing in you and with those around you. Maybe it is time to call someone who feels alienated from you and renew that relationship. The Holy Spirit will prick your heart and incite you to make it right.

    2. Imperio do Espirito Santo das Cinco Ribeiras (EN1-1A 32, Largo do Padre Belarmino Jose da Silva, Cinco Riverias, Angra do Heroismo) 19th -20th C. (38.68440, -27.31726) Google Map. Page 55 in the “Workbook.” The Imperio is named after the five streams that converge in the village, bringing fresh water to the fields and gardens. It was also built to honor Padre Belarmino Jose da Silva, who served the people as a chosen vessel of God. Spiritual Heart: Seek to serve rather than be served. Love unconditionally. Be virtuous. Show kindness. Be content. As the five streams flow into a rushing stream of living water, you, too, let these five attributes listed above flow into a personality that honors God.

    3. Imperio do Divino Espirito Santo de Santa Barbara (EN1-1A, Largo do Igreja, Santa Barbara, 9700, Angra do Heroismo) 19th-20th C. (38.69609, -27.33794) Google Map. Page 53 in the “Workbook.” This Imperio lies in close proximity to Santa Barbara Peak and the Nature Preserve. Here you will find picnic areas, scenic views, trails, and an area of natural beauty. As you walk the pilgrimage, you will be connected to the Holy Trinity through God, the Creator; Jesus, the Savior; and the Holy Spirit, the Counselor. It is at the extinct volcano of Santa Barbara that you can get a panoramic view of the entire island, as well as, on clear days, the other islands of St. George and Pico Island. The creator God will be screaming out his name around every corner. You will be tempted to take the numerous trails linking the peak to other areas known for their foliage and geological formations; however, make sure you have a good map of the trails, or you may find yourself lost in a dark forest with no way out. Spiritual Heart: God is a God of beauty and creativity, and since you are created in his image, you too are beautiful in the eyes of God and have His creative Spirit. Let him take you and renew you again with a grateful heart for all that He has created for your enjoyment. It says that, “God’s kindness (goodness) leads you to repentance.” (Romans 2:4). Repent, for when you blamed God for the ugliness and evil in the world, it is not his will. He desires that all men come to know Him in his fullness, and He wants to reveal to you his kindness of heart as well.

    4. Imperio do Espirito Santo das Doze Ribeiras (EN1-1A 100, Largo da Igreja, Doze Ribeiras) 1891 (38.71651, -27.36115) Google Map. Page 51 in the “Workbook.” The Brotherhood in the village of Doze Ribeiras dates back to the 17th century. The Imperio has been rebuilt after a terrible hurricane and then later after an earthquake. The village’s name means “twelve streams,” and, like most villages on Terceira, it is associated with religious significance. The village name honors the twelve apostles, or twelve tribes of Israel. Spiritual Heart: Come to understand that you are not alone, but you are a living relative to all those who have gone before you. You are part of the community of Christ—the church—and for over two thousand years, people have been serving God and humankind in love. You are loved, not just by one, but by many. As you look around, you will notice you are in the remote part of the island, but through perseverance, the church in every small village has survived. Go to the village church, sit awhile in the quietness, and take in the presence of God and allow Him to speak to you.

    5. Imperio do Espirito Santo da Serreta (EN1-1A, Largo da Igreja, Serreta) 19th-20th C. (38.75005, -27.36503) Google Map. Page 49 in the “Workbook.” You have now come to the most western edge of the island. There is a beautiful lookout and a lighthouse with views across the ocean and its volcanic shore. It is a place of mystery and intrigue, and the local legend gives it a real religious significance for the people of Terceira. It is the place of the Serreta procession and festival, where they honor a local priest and a historical icon. The Imperio has nothing to do with the festival as such since the church is the primary focus of the legend of Serreta. In September, the people of Terceira will ask, “Are you going to the festival at Serreta?” It is a feast, party, religious festival, and hike all in one event —and for this small island, it is a big event. Make sure you stop by the church to pick up a booklet on its history, traditions, and its present-day importance. Spiritual Heart: Serreta is the kind of place that lets you know the answers have not yet been given. There is still so much to learn in life, both in the spiritual and in the natural. The tropical trees that overshadow you and the vines that reach out with arms to encase you bring you back to the original creation and what must have been. It will erase old notions of scientific fact and breathe new life into religious overtones.

It is at this point in our pilgrimage that you will be processing so much information that you will be overwhelmed by the intrigues and highlights of the hike so far. At Serreta, make sure you book a place early and bring plenty of snacks, as the next leg of the pilgrimage will be somewhat tricky and different. You need to see the lighthouse and the ruins nearby that flood the forest with walls, paths, and an endless avalanche of volcanic rock. It is dark, mysterious, and an archaeological phenomenon.

At this point, you can continue around the island on the coast road or take the adventurous route over the top of the mountain along one of the many trails that dot the nature reserve. Make sure you get the directions on the Azores Trails official website, and please follow the marked trails. Observe proper trail etiquette and give yourself plenty of time to get lost and found. As there are no Imperios on this next day of pilgrimage, we will pick up the trail later on the northern shore of the island.

Seretta Trail: The Seretta Trail can be walked if you so desire. It is marked and begins in the village picnic area just north of town. It is a 7-kilometer circular trail rated as a medium hike. This will be the most strenuous part of the pilgrimage, but the most diverse. It will take you through extinct volcanoes, fern forests, eucalyptus groves, and ecosystems that range from the Scottish Highlands to the Amazon forests. You can continue on the trail and, instead of taking the circular route, follow the forest road that leads to Altares. At Altares, you can book local bed-and-breakfasts, but hotels and restaurants will be few. You can link to the travel agent listed on the website, and they can arrange accommodation that includes an evening meal and breakfast. It would be best if you continued walking to Biscoitos, as there are two small supermarkets, numerous accommodations, a bakery, and restaurants there.

  • “Walking with the Creator, God, and hearing him speak through nature and silence.”

    Distance: 16 km

    Duration: 9 hours

This trail and leg of the pilgrimage will not be like the other sections, as the hike is not connected to the Imperios at all. It is a fairly strenuous hike, with deep valleys and large gradients. It is a beautiful hike with three different ecosystems along the trail. Make sure you get the map of the area from Azores Trails, and a compass would be helpful as well, since it often rains at the mountain peaks, giving extraordinarily little visibility. You can easily get lost. If all else fails, head to the coast and go east; the coastal road will lead you to Altares or Biscoitos. (Biscoitos is famous for its volcanic swimming pools and vineyards.) However, once you make your way through the nature reserve, you will be on the road that leads from Angra to Altares. Turn left or north, and you will be on the correct road. From there, you will once again be going from Imperio to Imperio, starting with Altares.

    1. Imperio do Espirito Santo dos Altares (Canada do Palame, No. 70, Ao Patim, Altares) 19th-20th C. (38.79142, -27.29902) Google Map. Page 45 in the “Workbook.” The village of Altares is named after the word “altar” in the plural. Of course, an altar always means a place of dedication, with emphasis in the Old Testament on sacrifice. But in Micah 6:6-8 it states, “With what shall I come before the Lord, And bow myself before the High God? Shall I come before Him with burnt offerings, With calves a year old? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, Ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you, But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God. The sacrifice is always you, not someone or something else. Spiritual Heart: We are all on a pilgrimage, walking, hiking, looking, and seeking. So do what the scripture admonishes, “…walk humbly with your God.” It is not a race, nor a competition, but a walk as Adam and Eve did with God in the Garden of Eden. Walking, talking, listening, and obeying. Put it all on the altar at Altares.

    2. Imperio do Espirito Santo do Caminho das Biscoitos (EN1-1A 116, Largo Francisco Maria Brum, Biscoitos) 19th-20th C. (38.658121, -27.130815) Google Map. Page 43 in the “Workbook.” The road to Biscoitos (cookie or biscuit) leads to a village that is a destination for locals and tourists alike. Known for its vineyards surrounded by rock walls and its volcanic swimming pools, it is well worth the stop. If it is summer, a refreshing dip in the ocean pools after a long hike renews both the soul and the body. If it is winter, sitting and watching the waves crash in with their white flumes and ocean mist will capture your heart as well. It is a wonderful place to sit, have a cup of coffee, and debrief on the hiking you have done over the past 5 days. Spiritual Heart: Jesus described himself as the “living water” that, if you drink, you will never thirst again. It is at Biscoitos where the ocean and the constant breaking of waves on the shore remind you, in like manner, that Jesus is alive, just as much as the everlasting wave action beats against the black volcanic rocks. The roar of the waves, along with the ocean smells and breezes, takes us back to our Lord as the water that gives life to our souls.

    3. Imperio do Espirito Santo do Bairro de Sao Pedro dos Biscoitos (M1024 9 3, Largo Dr. Teotonio Pires, Biscoitos) 1886 (38.789543, -27.252992) Google Map. Page 41 in the “Workbook.” There are two Imperios in this village, and we are not sure why. However, one is more municipal in its context while the other appears to be more local in its emphasis. This Imperio is the older one and less elaborate in its décor, but it does seem to reflect a childlike faith and divine joy in the locals who celebrate here. Spiritual Heart: Jesus said, “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you convert and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18:3) The village of Biscoitos, not because of its name (cookie), but because of its personality, has a childlike playful feel, which in the religious world is sometimes seen as immature. However, humor and joy, play and fun, are not too far from God’s heart. Look at his various creations, particularly animals, and you will laugh at their antics. You will leave Biscoitos with joy in your heart and a joke to tell your neighbor. It is all good, clean fun in the name of our Lord.

By now, you will have experienced a wide range of emotions. Your head will be spinning with all the things you have learned about God, others, and yourself. The week-long pilgrimage is almost finished, and you wish it would not stop, yet you know it must. Tomorrow we will take a diversion to an otherworldly place, a tourist spot, but one that will challenge your life experiences up to now.

  • “Understanding of the mystery of the world not seen and the lack of knowledge thereof.”

Distance: 22 km – circular hike

    Duration: 7 hours

Today is a hike, a pilgrimage to the volcanic world, the underworld, seldom seen. The hike to Agra do Carvão, which is an open volcanic vent or tube, leads to a place most people do not understand. It is not of the world seen on the surface, but instead takes us deep into the earth’s interior. It is a tourist destination, and a new visitors’ center has just been built. You can take the stone steps down into the grotto and back again, but there is an elevator if you cannot climb multiple steps. Exactly, you may ask, what is spiritual about going down into a volcano? I think if you believe and allow yourself the privilege, you will discover that the spiritual world also has an underworld. There is a world that is not comfortable, fueled by fire, and challenged by evil. We have sought to know the Holy Trinity better, but we must also understand that not everything in this world is of God. There is a hidden world in the spirit that is at war with all that is good. Take the example of this lava tube, this leftover remnant of a volcano, that, with an open spirit and a little contemplation, you, too, will know that we know truly little about the enemy among us, the dark side. We are not saying that the Agra do Carvão is evil or sinister, but we are saying that it is a reminder of another spiritual world that coexists with us here on earth. Be aware. Be knowledgeable, but be assured, Jesus said, “I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33). This day is a day to be aware but not afraid of the other world, the satanic world. Pray and ask for protection and a covering in the Spirit over all things that satan dominates. He is not an equal with God, only a fallen angel, but one who wreaks havoc on many people. Be alert.

The hike there is along the main road, so you must be careful, as it is a widely used thoroughfare and vehicles travel at high speeds. You can take an “Uber” or taxi from Biscoitos and take a break from hiking, but the fares may fluctuate depending on the season.

*There are no Imperios on this road.

  • “Taking the Sabbath rest and learning how to be in communion with God.”

You should still be in Biscoitos, or you may have made your way back to Praia da Vitoria to the accommodation where it all began. Today should be Sunday, as most people arrive on the Tuesday morning flight and stay for 6 days, then return on the following Tuesday in the afternoon. That is the usual schedule, but your schedule may differ depending on your needs and location. However, we advise against hiking on Sunday, as many stores, restaurants, shops, and other concessions are closed. Portugal is a very Catholic country, so Sunday is still seen as a day of rest.

We would advise you to attend the church of your choice. In Praia and in Angra, churches of various denominations exist, and they would love you to visit them. As of now, there are no English-speaking services on the island, but hopefully that will change soon. In both Praia and Angra, there are Catholic and Protestant churches that welcome visitors and tourists. It may differ from your home church, but be mindful of local traditions and, with meekness and humility, seek to join in.

If you stay in Biscoitos, there is bus service to Angra and Praia, but on Sundays, the buses run on a limited schedule, so be sure to check the timetables. Once you are back in Praia, check back in to the Holy Spirit Pilgrimage Center and debrief. We would love to hear your story and your testimony of what God spoke to you along the pilgrimage road.

There is one more Imperio on the way to the airport. If you have time, stop in, and say your last prayers for the people of the island.

    1. Imperio do Espirito Santo das Lajes (EN1-1A, Largo do Igreja, Vila das Lajes) 19th C. (38.767185, -27.102615) Google Map. Page 29 in the “Workbook.” This Imperio is close to the airport and military base, so it would be a good place to ask God to give everyone traveling mercies and good health on their way back home. Spiritual Heart: Pray for Terceira and all those who arrive and leave, taking heartfelt emotions and spiritual insights gained from walking the Holy Spirit Pilgrimage. May God bless them all.

*Be sure to check into the airport two hours before your scheduled departure, and please stay connected with all your family and friends here on Terceira.

Driving Itinerary

The driving pilgrimage starts in Angra do Heroísmo, unlike the hiking pilgrimage, which begins in Praia da Vitória, closer to the airport. Angra offers more accommodation, cafe, and restaurant options that are not easily accessible in all locations; therefore, if you are driving a rental car, you can reach Angra easily by taking the one expressway on Terceira. To really get the most from the driving pilgrimage, you will also need to take time to pray, reflect, contemplate, and listen as you visit each “Imperio.” This is not a race or a competition to see how many “Imperios” you can visit, but rather, like the walking travelers, take time to slow down and listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit.

The “Workbook and Guide to the Terceira Holy Spirit Pilgrimage” is a must-read for a list of the 74 Imperios that dot the island and are accessible by car. It is also a guide for the meditations and prayers that coincide with each location. Additionally, the GPS on your phone will help you locate the various locations depending on the address and coordinates.

Total Distance – 120km, Pace 24km/day – Best for: Comprehensive coverage, photography, and those elderly or with mobility issues.

  • Theme: Historical Heart and Ancient Paths
Route: Complete loop of Angra city and the surrounding suburbs.
    Distance: 25km/Chapels: 21/Drive Time: 4-5 hours.
Highlights: The Outerio Imperio is the oldest Imperio on the island and is distinctive in its legacy and its architecture. Also, the Imperio do Espirito Santo da Santa Casa da Misericordia is forever linked to the establishment of the island’s first hospital. The hospital is named the Holy Spirit Hospital in recognition of that fact.
Starting Point: Imperio do Outeiro (oldest, 1670)
Additional Routes: Depending on where you are staying, the route will begin there and encompass as many chapels as you find that enhance your pilgrimage experience. Most people try to visit at least thirteen chapels. Look in the “Workbook and Guide to the Terceira Holy Spirit Pilgrimage,” and you can easily find the Imperios that are listed in the Angra district. Although there are many additional Imperios in the suburbs of Angra, an entire day would not be enough to visit all of them; therefore, listed below are the ones most readily accessible.

  • Theme: God the Creator and the Community of Christ’s Legacy.
Route: Angra do Heroismo and make a loop through Biscoitos
    Distance: 35 km/Chapels: 12/Drive Time: 4-5 hours
Starting Point: Start in the port of São Mateus and continue on the coastal road.
Highlights: Serreta is the most western point on the island and the most remote. There is a park there and a lighthouse, along with the Seretta trail that leads into the nature reserve and to the top of Santa Barbara peak. Because of its remoteness, the hike inland has no Imperios; however, the road there is one of the most scenic on the island. You will pass through Quatro Ribeiras, considered the first settlement on Terceira. At Serreta, there are ruins in the tropical topography that archaeologists are still trying to decipher. Biscoitos, at the end of the driving route, is famous for its volcanic tidal pools, perfect for ocean swimming. Since you are driving, you will have time to drive to the peak of Santa Barbara, where you can see the islands of St. George and Pico on a cloudless day. If you have time, you can also visit the Algar do Carvão, a volcanic cave, as an optional pilgrimage extension.

  • Theme: Understanding how work and our occupations are a labor unto the Lord.
Route: Vila Nova, Lajes, Sao Bras, Aqualva, Praia Vitoria
    Distance: 25 km/Chapels 10/Drive Time: 3 hours
Highlights: Agriculture, especially animal husbandry, is vital to Terceira’s economy, and on this drive, you can experience the blessings God bestows on one’s vocation. You can view the airport, the abandoned airbase next door, the vegetable fields, the island’s commercial port, and other related business areas. Even in the midst of work and labor, you can still experience God’s presence. Understanding how believers in Christ respond to people, both in and out of a religious setting, enables the God of the masses to speak to all. Make sure you visit some of Praia’s historical churches.

  • Theme: See the complete picture of God’s plan and purpose for your life.
Route: Santa Cruz, Island Interior, and the Serra do Cume
    Distance: 25km/Chapels: None/Drive Time: 3 hours
Highlights: The road leads to the touristic spots you may have missed, as they are in the island’s interior. However, since today marks the end of the driving pilgrimage, the first thing to see is one of the biggest highlights on Terceira. It is the beautiful overlook at Serra do Cume. This location is seen on all the postcards and travelogs. It is a panoramic view of the entire valley left by an ancient volcano, which is full of black-and-white cows in fields surrounded by ancient rock walls. It is a gorgeous site to end your driving pilgrimage experience. This area of beauty will help you see that we are just a small part in the big picture of God. He is doing something great, and it is right before our eyes.

The following is a list of other sites that are equally important. They will assist you in discovering God the Father through His creation.

    1. Serra do Cume – Follow the road signs outside of Praia Vitoria, which lead to the top of the overlook. Be sure to plan the trip for a day when the summit is not fogged in.

    2. Algar do Carvão – On the V/R roadway leading from Praia da Vitoria to Angra do Heroismo, there are road signs that point the way. Algar do Carvão is a volcanic lava tube and one of the most interesting sites on the island. There is a cost to go inside, but it is well worth it. There are no Imperios in the area, as this is a rural setting; however, I think there is a spiritual lesson to learn: not only is there a Godly world, but also an underworld not seen, an ungodly one. It is not to say that the cave is a heathen representation of the spiritual evil that is always present, but it should remind you that there is a world unseen that is equally real.

    3. Funas do Enxofre – At this location, there are sulphuric volcanic vents that you can observe and smell. There is no cost to enter the trail that leads to the valley of volcanic vents.

    4. Gruta do Natal – Here is another tourist site linked to volcanic activity on the island. Again, there are well-marked signs leading to the area. There are hiking trails throughout the interior of the island that are not as strenuous as some of the pilgrimage walks.

As you are on a driving tour, many of the remaining Imperios are easily accessible. “The Workbook and Guide to the Terceira Holy Spirit Pilgrimage” will be a constant companion, helping you experience all that the pilgrimage has to offer, both spiritually and practically. It can be bought online or at the “Terceira Pilgrimage Center.”
